The falling-block puzzle is one of gaming's great origin stories. In 1984 Alexey Pajitnov, a researcher at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow, wrote the first tetromino-stacking game on an Elektronika 60 that could not even draw graphics — the pieces were made of bracket characters. The idea of seven four-square shapes falling into a well proved so magnetic that it crossed the Iron Curtain on floppy disks, and the genre it founded has been played on virtually every device with a screen since.
Players eventually discovered the format rewards study as much as reflexes. Modern stackers talk about minimising surface “bumpiness,” avoiding covered holes, and managing the well — the single deep column reserved for a long I-piece and a four-line clear. At high speed the game becomes almost rhythmic: you stop reacting to the current piece and start placing it while planning the next two.
Arrange the falling blocks to form complete horizontal lines, which then clear. Survive as long as possible and clear as many lines as you can without letting the stack reach the top.
Move pieces left and right with the arrow keys, rotate with the up arrow (or a rotate key), and press down to drop faster — many versions also support a hard drop with the Spacebar. On touch devices, swipe to move and tap to rotate.
You score for every line you clear, and clearing several lines at once is worth far more per line, so big multi-line clears are the key to a high score. The game ends when the stack of blocks reaches the top of the well.
Keep your stack low and flat, and avoid leaving deep holes you cannot fill. Leave one column open and feed long pieces into it to clear several lines at once for a big bonus. As the speed climbs, plan where each piece lands before it arrives.
