2048 was created in March 2014 by Gabriele Cirulli, a 19-year-old Italian developer who built it in a single weekend as a variation on the earlier games 1024 and Threes. Released free and open-source, it exploded overnight — millions of players within days — and spawned countless clones, yet the original formula remains the most satisfying: simple rules, exponential stakes.
Mathematically minded players love 2048 because every swipe matters: a new tile (usually a 2, occasionally a 4) appears after each move, so wasted moves fill the board fast. The classic winning approach is the snake or corner chain — keep your largest tile parked in a corner and arrange descending values in a zigzag so merges cascade neatly into one another.
Combine tiles with the same number to build bigger numbers and create a tile worth 2048 — then keep going for an even higher score.
Use the arrow keys on desktop, or swipe up, down, left or right on mobile, to slide all tiles. Matching tiles that collide merge into one.
Every merge adds the value of the newly created tile to your score — combining two 64s scores 128 — so bigger merges are worth exponentially more. Reaching the 2048 tile wins the game, but you can keep playing to push your score higher until the board fills and no moves remain.
Keep your highest tile locked in a corner and build around it, work in one main direction, and avoid scattering big tiles across the board.
