🃏How to Play Euchre

Euchre is the fast, punchy trick-taking card game of the American Midwest, and you can play it free online here in your browser — no download, no sign-up. You partner with North against West and East, each player dealt five cards from a trimmed 24-card deck running nine through ace. An upcard is turned to open the bidding: order it up as trump or pass, and if everyone passes, a second round lets any player name a different suit. The team that calls trump becomes the makers and must win at least three of the five tricks.

What makes Euchre unlike any other trump game is the bowers. The jack of the trump suit — the right bower — is the highest card in the game, and the jack of the same colour — the left bower — counts as the second-highest trump, temporarily abandoning its printed suit. That one rule reshuffles the entire pecking order every hand and is the first thing every new player must burn into memory.

The game itself is an American story. Euchre descends from Juckerspiel, a game carried across the Atlantic by Alsatian and German immigrants in the early 1800s, and it swept the United States so thoroughly that it was once called the national card game. It even changed the standard deck: the joker was invented around the 1860s specifically for Euchre, as an extra top trump called the best bower. Today the game remains a fixture in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ontario, where tournament nights and kitchen-table grudge matches keep it thriving.

Objective

Be the first team to reach 10 points. Your side scores by calling trump and taking at least three of the five tricks in a hand, with bonus points for sweeping all five or for defeating — euchring — the other team's bid.

Controls

During bidding, click Order Up or Pass, or pick a suit on the second round. If you are the dealer and trump is ordered up, click a card to discard. During play, click a legal card in your hand — you must follow the led suit whenever you can. Easy, Medium and Hard set how shrewdly the computer bids and plays.

Scoring

Makers who win three or four tricks score 1 point; taking all five tricks — a march — scores 2. If the makers fall short of three tricks they are euchred, and the defenders score 2 points instead. A lone hand that wins all five tricks scores 4. First team to 10 points wins the game.

Tips & Strategy

Count the bowers before you bid: a hand with the right bower and two more trumps is usually worth calling. Lead trump when your side are the makers to strip opponents' trumps, but hold it back on defence. Remember the left bower is not part of its printed suit — playing it never follows a plain-suit lead. And trust your partner: if they called trump, save your off-suit aces to back them up.
