Contract bridge as we know it was born in 1925, when the American railroad heir Harold Vanderbilt refined the older game of auction bridge during a cruise through the Panama Canal, adding vulnerability and the modern scoring table. It swept the world within a decade — fuelled by Ely Culbertson's newspaper columns and celebrated challenge matches — and grew into an international mind sport with world championships and a devoted tournament circuit. Behind it all sits whist, the plain-trick English game from which the whole family descends.

Win the auction with a contract your side can make, then take at least the bid number of tricks beyond the book of six. Win two games to claim the rubber.
During the auction, tap a level-and-suit button — or Pass, Double or Redouble. In the play, click a card in your hand to play it, and you must follow the led suit whenever you can. When your side wins the auction you play both your own hand and the exposed dummy across the table.
Made contracts score trick points below the line: 20 per trick in clubs and diamonds, 30 in hearts and spades, and 40 then 30 in notrump. A hundred points below the line wins a game, and two games take the rubber. Overtricks, slam bonuses, doubles and defeating the opponents' contracts all score above the line.
Count your high-card points before bidding — an opening hand is usually 12 or more — and trust your partner's bids to describe their hand. As declarer, plan the whole hand before playing to trick one: count winners in notrump and losers in a suit contract. On defence, lead your longest and strongest suit against notrump contracts.
What does the 'book' mean in Bridge?
The first six tricks the declaring side wins are the book. Only tricks beyond six count toward the contract, so a bid of two hearts promises eight total tricks.
