Gin Rummy is the classic two-player card game of speed and sharp thinking, and here you can play Gin Rummy free online in your browser with no download and no sign-up. You are dealt ten cards and race a computer opponent to organize your hand into melds — sets of three or four cards of the same rank, and runs of three or more consecutive cards in the same suit. On every turn you draw one card, either the unknown top of the stock or the face-up discard, then throw one card away.
The cards left outside your melds are called deadwood, and your goal is to drive that count down fast. The moment your deadwood drops to ten points or fewer you can knock to end the hand — or hold out for a perfect zero and go Gin for a bonus. With clean rules, quick rounds and three AI difficulty levels, this free online Gin Rummy suits a relaxed coffee-break game or a real challenge, on desktop or mobile.
The game is usually credited to Elwood T. Baker, a Brooklyn whist teacher, who devised it with his son around 1909 as a faster offshoot of the rummy family — itself descended from the nineteenth-century Mexican game Conquian. Gin exploded in popularity in the 1930s and 40s when it became the card game of Hollywood: stars played it between takes, gossip columns reported studio scores, and Broadway even staged a play about feuding gin partners.
What keeps Gin Rummy evergreen is the tension in every draw. Taking the face-up discard gives you a certain card but tells your opponent exactly what you are collecting; drawing blind keeps your plans hidden but wastes turns. Reading the discard pile, counting what is gone, and judging the moment to knock — early to catch a fat hand, or late to chase gin — is a skill you can sharpen for a lifetime.
Form your ten cards into sets and runs to minimize your leftover deadwood, then knock with 10 or fewer deadwood points — or hit zero deadwood to declare Gin — before the AI beats you to it.
It is your turn first: click the Stock pile to draw a hidden card or click the face-up Discard to take it, then click any card in your hand to discard it. Cards highlighted in green are already part of a meld. When eligible, press the Knock or GIN button, then click the single card you want to discard for your knock.
When a player knocks, the difference between the two deadwood counts is awarded to the lower hand. Going Gin (zero deadwood) earns that difference plus a 25-point bonus. If the knocker is matched or beaten on deadwood, the defender undercuts and steals the points plus a 10-point bonus. Scores accumulate across hands.
Take the discard only when it completes or extends a meld — otherwise draw blind and keep your plans hidden. Middle cards like 6s, 7s and 8s connect the most possible runs, so hold them early. Watch every card the AI picks up: it is telling you exactly which ranks and suits are unsafe to throw.
What is deadwood in Gin Rummy?
Deadwood is every card in your hand that is not part of a set or run. Its total point value decides whether you can knock and who wins the hand.
When am I allowed to knock?
As soon as the deadwood left after your discard totals ten points or fewer. Reach exactly zero and you can declare Gin for a 25-point bonus instead.
What is an undercut?
If the defending player's deadwood is equal to or lower than the knocker's, the defender undercuts — stealing the point difference plus a 10-point bonus.
