You can't stop instantly — the ship has real momentum. Rotate to face away from your drift and fire short bursts of thrust to brake gradually.
Why do the rocks split when I shoot them?
Large rocks break into medium rocks and medium into small ones. Only the smallest fragments vanish when shot, so each hit can temporarily make the field more dangerous.
