8️⃣How to Play Crazy Eights

Crazy Eights is the classic shedding card game, and this version lets you play free online Crazy Eights right in your browser against a sharp computer opponent — no download, no sign-up. You and the AI are each dealt seven cards, with the rest forming a face-down draw pile and one card flipped to start the discard pile. On your turn you play a card that matches the active suit or the rank of the top card; stuck with nothing to play, you draw from the pile and try again.

The game descends from a 1930s American pastime called simply Eights, and folklore says the "crazy" was added from Section 8, the US military discharge classification of the era. Its most famous descendant is Uno: in 1971 an Ohio barber named Merle Robbins invented Uno as a purpose-built Crazy Eights deck after a family argument over the rules. If you have ever played Uno, you already know this game's soul.

Three difficulty levels keep things fresh: Easy uses a single deck for a quick, friendly match, while Medium and Hard shuffle in two decks plus special action cards, turning a light children's game into a genuinely tactical duel where timing your power cards is everything.

Objective

Be the first player to get rid of every card in your hand. As soon as your hand is empty, you win the round against the AI.

Controls

Click any highlighted card to play it onto the discard pile, or click the draw pile to take a card. Playing an 8 is wild — it lets you name the next suit using the suit picker. On Medium and Hard, a 2 forces your opponent to draw two cards, and on Hard a Queen skips their turn.

Scoring

Each round is win-or-lose: empty your hand before the AI to take the game. There is no point tally — clever suit changes, well-timed 8s, and saving Draw-2 and Skip cards for the right moment are how you swing the match in your favour.

Tips & Strategy

Save your 8s for emergencies rather than spending them early, keep track of which suits the computer avoids, and steer the active suit toward the cards you hold most of. When you have a choice of plays, shed your action cards while you still control the tempo of the game.

FAQ

What does an 8 do in Crazy Eights?
An 8 can be played on top of anything and acts as a wild card — you choose the suit the next player must follow.

Is Crazy Eights the same as Uno?
They are close cousins. Uno was invented in 1971 as a custom-deck version of Crazy Eights, so the match-suit-or-rank, play-or-draw rules feel very similar.

Is Crazy Eights free to play here?
Yes — free and unlimited in your browser, with no download or sign-up.
