Whack-a-Mole is the classic arcade reflex game, now free online in your browser. Moles pop up from a grid of nine holes and duck back down in a flash — your job is to bop as many as you can before each 30-second round ends. The faster you click or tap, the higher your score climbs.
Crank up the difficulty and the moles get quicker and trickier: Medium sprinkles in glowing golden moles worth triple points, while Hard adds ticking bombs that cost you points if you hit them. It is a deceptively simple test of hand-eye coordination — easy to learn, tough to master. No download or sign-up required.
The original Whac-A-Mole arcade machine traces back to 1970s amusement arcades — the Japanese Mogura Taiji (“Mole Buster”) appeared in 1975, and an American version followed soon after, complete with padded mallet and taunting plastic moles. It became such a cultural fixture that “playing whack-a-mole” entered everyday English as shorthand for fighting problems that keep popping up somewhere new the moment you squash one.
Under the silliness sits a real test of human performance. Simple visual reaction time averages around a quarter of a second, but whacking a mole is a choice reaction — you must spot which of nine holes is active, decide, and move — which is measurably slower. That is why the best players hover near the centre and rely on peripheral vision instead of staring at one hole: they cut the movement cost, which is the only part of the loop you can actually train quickly.
Whack as many moles as possible before the 30-second timer runs out — and resist smacking the bombs.
Click with the mouse or tap on a touch screen the instant a mole appears. Press Start to begin a round.
Each regular mole is +1, golden moles are +3, and hitting a bomb subtracts 5. Your highest score per difficulty is saved as your personal best.
Keep your cursor near the centre of the grid so you can reach any hole quickly. On Hard, slow down just enough to spot bombs before you swing — a mistaken hit erases five hard-earned points.
How long does a round last?
Each round lasts 30 seconds — whack as many moles as you can before the timer runs out.
What are the golden moles?
Golden moles appear on Medium and Hard difficulty and are worth 3 points instead of 1, but they duck back down faster than regular moles.
What happens if I hit a bomb?
Bombs appear on Hard difficulty and subtract 5 points when hit, so slow down just enough to check before you swing.
