Sea Battle is a browser version of the classic Battleship-style naval strategy game. This is free online sea battle at its purest: no download, no sign-up — just open the page and play battleship in browser straight away. You command a fleet of five warships — a Carrier, Battleship, Cruiser, Submarine and Destroyer — hidden on your own 10×10 ocean grid while your opponent's identical fleet stays concealed behind a wall of fog.
The game runs in two stages. First you deploy your fleet, placing each vessel by clicking or letting Auto-Place scatter them for you, with a live preview showing legal positions. Then it is sea battle vs computer: you and the AI trade salvos, calling out coordinates one cell at a time. Hits, misses and sunk ships are tracked on both grids, and a fleet roster shows how much steel each side has left. Three difficulty levels change how cleverly the computer hunts — Easy fires at random, Medium switches to focused targeting after a hit, and Hard adds a parity sweep so it corners your ships far faster. It is pure deduction and a little luck, the tension that has made Battleship a tabletop favourite for generations.
Sea Battle is the classic naval guessing game better known as Battleship. It began as a pencil-and-paper pastime around the First World War, was published on paper as Salvo in 1930s America, and became a household name when Milton Bradley released the plastic peg version in 1967. The digital game keeps the original pure form: two hidden fleets, alternating shots, and pure deduction.
The game has an enduring appeal for mathematicians and programmers, because optimal play is a genuine probability puzzle: at every turn you can compute which cells could still hold the remaining ships and fire where the density is highest. The Hard AI here reasons along those lines, so beating it consistently means hunting with parity patterns and denying it easy targets with a well-spread fleet.
Be the first admiral to find and sink every enemy ship. Locate all five vessels hidden on the opponent's 10×10 grid before your own fleet is destroyed.
During setup, click a cell on your grid to drop the current ship, use Rotate to switch between horizontal and vertical, or hit Auto-Place to deploy instantly. In battle, click any cell in Enemy Waters to fire there. A hit lets you fire again; a miss passes the turn to the computer.
There is no point score — you win by sinking the enemy fleet first. Your result is the number of shots it took to win, saved as your best (fewest-shots) record. Fewer shots means sharper deduction, so aim to trim that total each game.
After a hit, fire into the four neighbouring cells to find the ship's heading, then keep going along that line until it sinks. Spread early shots in a checkerboard pattern so no ship can hide between them, and remember the smallest ship is only two cells long. On Hard the AI uses the same tricks against you, so deploy your fleet apart and avoid the edges.
Is Sea Battle the same as Battleship?
Yes — Sea Battle is the classic Battleship naval game: five ships hidden on a 10×10 grid, and you fire shots to find and sink the enemy fleet before yours goes down.
What is the best strategy in Sea Battle?
Hunt in a checkerboard pattern so even the two-cell ship cannot hide, then after a hit probe the neighbouring cells to find the ship's direction and finish it along that line.
Is Sea Battle free to play online?
Yes — play unlimited games against the AI in your browser, free, with no download or account. Your best fewest-shots record is saved between sessions.
