🫘Mancala — Rules, History & Winning Strategy

Mancala is one of the oldest and most widespread families of games on earth — a game of 'sowing' seeds around a board of pits and capturing your way to victory. This free online Mancala game (the popular Kalah version) plays in your browser against a computer opponent, with no download or sign-up.

Scoop up the seeds from a pit, drop them one by one around the board, and set up captures and extra turns. It is simple to learn, but it rewards players who can count and plan a few moves ahead.

The history of Mancala

Mancala is not a single game but a huge family, with hundreds of regional variants played across Africa, the Middle East and Asia for thousands of years. Ancient boards — rows of shallow pits — have been found cut into stone at temples and settlements, and the game spread along trade routes carrying names such as oware, bao and congkak.

The version most people meet today is Kalah, a modern commercial adaptation popularised in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. Across all its forms Mancala shares the same elegant core — sowing seeds around the board pit by pit — which is why it is often called one of the world's true classic count-and-capture games.

How to play

Each player owns the six pits on their side of the board and a scoring store (the large pit) to their right. On your turn you scoop up all the seeds from one of your pits and sow them one at a time into the following pits, going counterclockwise, dropping one in your own store as you pass it but skipping your opponent's store.

Two special rules drive the whole game. If the last seed you sow lands in your own store, you take another turn. And if the last seed lands in an empty pit on your own side, you capture that seed plus all the seeds in the pit directly opposite, sending them to your store. The game ends when one side is empty, and whoever has the most seeds in their store wins.

Controls

Click any one of your own pits to pick up its seeds and sow them counterclockwise. Legal pits are highlighted. Landing your last seed in your store earns an extra move, and landing in an empty pit on your side triggers a capture automatically.

Strategy: how to win at Mancala

Mancala can look like luck, but it is almost pure calculation — the same move always does the same thing. These principles turn counting into winning.

Chain your extra turns. Any move that ends in your store grants another turn, so plan sequences of extra-turn moves that let you play several times in a row. Stringing these together lets you rearrange the board and reach a capture before your opponent gets a move at all.

Play the extra-turn move last. Because a pit that scores an extra turn will still be there after your other moves, spend your ordinary moves first and save the guaranteed extra turn to keep your streak alive. Order matters as much as which pit you choose.

Set up captures on the opposite pit. A capture fires when your last seed lands in an empty pit on your side while the pit directly opposite is loaded. Deliberately empty a pit, then arrange to drop a single seed into it while your opponent has stacked the pit across from it — the bigger their pile, the bigger your haul.

Watch what your opponent can capture. Every loaded pit of yours is a target for the opponent's captures. Before you move, check whether you are leaving a pit they can empty into and capture across from, and defuse it by emptying or reinforcing it first.

Bank seeds from your near pits. Seeds in the pits closest to your store need the fewest steps to score. Feeding the pits near your store, and being careful about hoarding seeds far from it, tends to convert into points more reliably.

Plan the endgame emptying. When one side runs low, the player who empties their side first lets the other keep the remaining seeds — so count ahead. Sometimes the winning plan is to force the position where the leftover seeds fall to you.

Because Mancala is fully deterministic, the higher AI levels calculate captures and extra-turn chains precisely — beat them by counting each sow all the way to its last seed before you commit, especially any move that could hand back a big capture.

Frequently asked questions

How do you win at Mancala?
You win by collecting more seeds in your store than your opponent. You do that by chaining extra-turn moves, setting up captures, and steering the seeds on the board toward your own store.

What triggers an extra turn?
If the last seed you sow lands in your own store, you immediately take another turn. Chaining several of these together within a single turn is one of the strongest tactics in the game.

How do captures work?
If the last seed you sow lands in an empty pit on your own side, you capture that seed and all the seeds in the pit directly opposite it, moving them all into your store.

Is this Mancala game free?
Yes — play free in your browser against the computer, with no download and no sign-up.
