Ludo is the beloved cross-and-circle race game played by families worldwide, and you can play Ludo free online here in your browser with no download or sign-up. Each player has four tokens that begin locked in their base. You can only release a token onto the track by rolling a 6, after which you race it clockwise around the 52-square ring and up your private home column to the centre.
What makes this free online Ludo so lively is the luck-and-tactics mix: landing on an opponent's token (except on a safe star square) sends it all the way back to base, while rolling a 6, capturing a rival, or getting a token home all earn you an extra roll. Roll three 6s in a row, though, and you forfeit the turn. Play Ludo in browser against two AI opponents on Easy or three on Medium and Hard, where the computer hunts captures and guards the safe squares.
Ludo descends directly from Pachisi, the great cross-and-circle race game of India played since at least the sixth century — Mughal emperor Akbar famously staged it on giant courtyard boards with members of his court as living pieces. The streamlined dice version was patented in England in 1896 under the name Ludo, Latin for "I play," and the family has since spread worldwide as Parcheesi in America, Mensch ärgere Dich nicht in Germany and Fia in Scandinavia.
Its endurance comes from a clever balance: the die decides how far you move, but you decide which token moves. Choosing between escaping danger, hunting a capture, hoarding the safe squares or racing for home is real strategy, even in a family game — which is why Ludo still settles bragging rights at kitchen tables on every continent.
Be the first player to bring all four of your tokens around the board and into your home triangle.
Press Roll to roll the die. Roll a 6 to release a token from base, or move a token already on the track. When more than one move is legal, tap the highlighted token you want to move.
There is no point total — the first player to get all four tokens home wins. A win is saved to your record for the chosen difficulty.
Spread your tokens so a single capture can't cripple you, and pause on the star safe-squares when danger is near. Always weigh bringing a new token out against advancing one close to home, and pounce on rivals sharing a square within reach of your roll.
Do you need a 6 to start in Ludo?
Yes — a token can only leave your base when you roll a 6, and rolling a 6 also earns you an extra roll. Three 6s in a row, however, forfeits your turn.
What are the safe squares in Ludo?
Star-marked squares protect tokens from capture. Anywhere else, an opponent landing on your token sends it back to its base to start over.
How many opponents do you play against?
Two AI opponents on Easy and three on Medium and Hard, where the computer actively hunts captures and guards the safe squares.
